Is Toyota Corolla Cross XRV worth it?

When the Toyota Corolla Cross XRV was launched, it did not meet expectations, but the striking strength of the Toyota brand made it a striking figure present on the streets.

An advantage of the Corolla Cross over its two main competitors, the Jeep Compass and the Volkswagen Taos, is the fact that it is a flex-electric hybrid vehicle.

This version is the most expensive, but its price is comparable to the two rivals mentioned above that only have a combustion engine.

We can say that the Toyota Corolla Cross XRV is a politically correct SUV when using ethanol.

It has a like-it-or-don't-like style, with a front that stands out in the crowd, however this SUV was built on the same platform as the Corolla sedan.

Corolla Cross XRV interior

The interior has rubberized upper parts of the doors and central strip, armrest and seat coverings with part leather, but the upper part of the dashboard remains plastic.

We can highlight the old-fashioned parking brake fitted to the Corolla Cross, which requires using your left foot to operate.

As it is a top-of-the-line version, the ideal would be for it to already use the electromechanical system.

Its wheelbase is 2,64m, which reduces the interior space a little, especially for the rear seat passenger.

Its trunk is not one of the largest in its category, it only has 440 liters of cargo capacity.

The air conditioning is two-zone, with outlets for the rear seat, the driver's seat is electric, has a sunroof and multimedia with an 8-inch screen.

Mechanical Engineering

There are three engines, one combustion with flex technology, which delivers up to 101 horsepower with ethanol and 14,5 kg of torque, and two electric engines that deliver another 72 horsepower and 16,6 kg of torque, so that the combined power is 122 horses.

The two electric motors are located inside the CVT automatic transmission so that the three work automatically, helping each other when necessary.

It is worth noting that one of the electric motors becomes a Alternator during deceleration or when it is activated by the combustion engine to recharge the battery.

O SUV Corolla Cross has four-wheel disc brakes that are regenerative and help recharge the batteries during braking.

All of this is controlled by an electronic control unit that makes the transitions very smoothly and silently, which is impressive even when driving on uneven surfaces.

Drivability and Performance

Features four driving modes:

  • Normal.
  • Power for maximum performance with engines working simultaneously.
  • Eco favors electric mode to save fuel.
  • EV stops when the battery is fully charged, being able to move for 2 km using only the battery charge as long as you don't accelerate too hard.

The gearbox has position D, which works as an engine brake and forces the battery to charge quickly, ideal for long descents.

Its performance is considered very reasonable, going from zero to one hundred in eleven seconds with a maximum speed of 170 km per hour.

The biggest advantage of this set is the low consumption, reaching 14,3 km/l on ethanol and 20,0 km/l on gasoline in the city/highway circuit.
