BYD: BYD's Future Electric Vehicle Plans Leaked

The company’s future electric vehicle (EV) plans BYD leaked, revealing the launch of a new electric SUV in April to compete with the Tesla Model Y, one of the brand's best-selling models.

After overtaking Tesla in the last three months of 2023 to become the best-selling EV manufacturer globally, BYD aims to maintain its position by launching several new electric models.

Ocean Series Releases

Leaked plans for BYD's Ocean series in China include new model launches Seal e Dolphin this year, along with a new Electric SUV intended to compete with Tesla's Model Y.

The Dolphin, one of BYD's best-selling models in China and abroad, will feature design updates and a larger battery, enabling autonomy of up to 520 km (323 miles) CLTC, an increase from the previous 420 km (260 miles).

Global Expansion and Competition

Dolphin sales reached 18.905 units in the last month alone, representing an increase of 7% compared to January of the previous year. Recently, BYD launched Dolphin in international markets such as Mexico, Japan, Europe and Brazil.

New Sea Lion 07 Electric SUV

BYD will continue with the launch of its new electric SUV Sea Lion 07, a midsize electric SUV expected to compete directly with Tesla's Model Y.

Revealed in November at the 2023 Guangzhou International Automobile Expo, the Sea Lion 07 is described as the brand's first mid-size smart urban electric SUV.

Design and Competitive Prices

Wolfgang Egger, a former Lamborghini and Audi designer, led the design of the electric SUV, which features elements from both iconic brands.

With similar dimensions to the Tesla Model Y, the Sea Lion 07 will be offered in three engine configurations, with prices starting around 200.000 to 260.000 yuan (approximately $28.000 – $35.900), below Tesla's Model Y prices.

Upgrades and New Models

In June, BYD plans to release an enhanced version of Seal EV, competing with Tesla's Model 3. A new BYD Seal S is scheduled for September, with few details revealed so far.

Entry into the Ultra-luxury Segment

Additionally, BYD is expanding into the ultra-luxury segment with the launch of the new Yangwang U7, an electric luxury sedan with nearly 1.300 hp and 800 km (500 miles) of CLTC range, expected to start around $140.000 (1.000.000 yuan).

Prospects for 2024

BYD continues to expand its lineup with new EVs, maintaining momentum into 2024. With record sales of 1,6 million EVs last year, a 73% increase over 2022, and new models launching in key markets globally , the brand is well positioned to drive growth in 2024.
